EXT. ROADSIDE OF SHOPLOTS, 7-11 – NIGHT

SC 1 cast in scene / ERIC / WAIWOH / ANAND / CHEE /
location ROADSIDE with 7-11 / inside CAR

A small suburb, rows of shop lots, a middle age men exits a 7-11, enters a car parked outside, back seat. car door slams shut, there are 3 more middle aged men,1 Indian and 3 Chinese in total, they drove off.

ERIC
(Takes out a pack of cigarette and passes it to Waiwoh in the front passenger seat)
Here, you owe me 7.40 man.

WAIWOH
(pays Eric 10 bucks. takes the cigarette, looking O.S.)
Thanks man.

ERIC
(look out the window)
pass you the change later man...Hey, I'm hungry, wanna get something to eat?

ANAND
(started laughing)
Hahaha...

CHEE
(driving)
Oh Man! why didn't you get something just now?

WAIWOH
(looking O.S.)
You just ate la. sei fei hai a. * cantonese

ANAND
(still laughing)
Macha.. eat Burger la.. got stall in front there.

CHEE
(driving)

ANAND
(Pointing)

oh.. ok. i see it..

Car pulls over at the road side, in a dodgy area in a corner of the shoplot, got a dim light. all four exits the car and walk over to the stall


EXT. ROADSIDE, BURGER STALL– NIGHT

The burger stall in a small suburb rows of shop houses. An unassuming average normal Malay guy with a tint of Mat Rock look. burger boy in his early 20s is at his stall busy manning his stall. His name is ZUL. The night is rather quiet but business is as usual for him. the stall has a big square umbrella. got some holes in it typical light bulb hanging from the top.



ERIC
(walk up the stall)
Boss! Burger daging special satu!

ZUL
(looking thru his stocks)
Daging habis la boss... ayam boleh?

ERIC
(Not bothered)
Boleh... bagi special lah.



OPENING CREDITS

(looks thru his pockets.. again)

ANAND
(started laughing)
hahaha...

CHEE
(standing)
Oh Man! that was just 10 munites ago

ANAND
(still laughing.. gave Eric 10 bucks)
Macha.. here... 10 bucks....


ERIC
(took it form Anand and passed it to ram)

ZUL
(returns change)
Thank you boss..


Eric smiles and walks over to join the guys. ram grabs his guitar and starts strumming a tune. The guys break into a silence, peer over looking at him and smile.

(pause)
Boleh la…kalau mau carik makan sikit-sikit boleh jalan kot. (laughs). Lagu ni wa tulis sendiri. Ok ke?

ERIC
(standing)
Boleh punye … kena dengan suara lu ngam bro. Eh, lu tak nak masuk itu contest on TV ka? Mentor ka, boleh kasi pair lu sama dengan Mentor lu Amy Search! Pheeeewiiiittt!!!

WAIWOH
(returns change)
Wei kalau lu masuk bro, kita semua support hantar SMS vote untuk lu tau..

ANAND
(assures)
Ah.. gua pun sama support lu 100 percen..

(joins in the conversation)

(ZUL is seen at the stall. Since business is slow, he decides to make a call from a phone booth nearby. He is calling Sam at the studio)
ram walks over to the public phone booth besides his stall. 5 metres away. picks up the phone and puts in a coin. dails. we hear connecting tone

ZUL

Sam... ram ni.. macam mana?

SAM
(voice over phone)
Gua ok .. Lu dah siap ke belum sen? Kalau ada, dalam RM5,000 kita dah boleh proceed.

ZUL

Wa rasa dalam 2 minggu lagi boleh la bro. Tunggu gaji gua masuk dulu boleh?

SAM
(voice over phone)
Gaji…???

ZUL

Gaji despatch wa dengan duit niaga burger la bro…!

SAM
(voice over phone)
Bro… material gua dah siap. Kalau lu bayar deposit dulu pun cantik. Balance nanti kita talk bila keja dah settle.

ZUL
(smiles upon hearing the good news)
Ok Sam.. ngam la macam tu … terima kasih banyak… wa chow dulu...



EXT. ROADSIDE, PUBLIC PHONE– NIGHT

ram puts in a coin. dails. goes on to make another call. He looks hesitant initially but he dials the number anyway .we hear connecting tone.

(fiddleing with the buttons)
Assalammualaikum mak. ram ni….

ZUL'S MOTHER
(voice over phone) intercut with (shot of floor... cigarette buds dropped.. dissolve to more cigarette buds.. dissolve to more and more...)

Waalaikumsalam … Hah ZUL .. Lama kau tak telefon mak ni. Kau tak sihat ke? Kerja macam mana? ….. blah blah blah blah ….. Ni mak nak cakap ni, cuba lah kau cari kerja yang elok2 sikit .. Ini kerja despatch, ke hulu ke hilir naik motor … tak tentu hujan ke, panas ke … hish bahaya ZUL.. mak risau kan kau nak oi… Balik lah kampong ni …Kerja dengan Pak Ngah kau .. tolong berniaga kat kedai runcit dia … dia pun takde anak lelaki nak menolong … Balik la ZUL… (she continues nagging.)

ZUL
(fiddleing with the buttons and he hangs up)
Yea lah mak… Ya mak … Ok mak…Kirim salam kat abah yea… Jaga diri mak… Assalammualaikum…


takes a deep breath and walks slowly back to his stall. Still reeling from hearing the good news, thanks to Sam...he walks back to his stall

A motorbike "kap chai" approaches stops in front of his stall. The motorcyclist removes his visor and smiles. It’s his colleague, Fendy

Fendy!!

FENDY
(bikes pull up.. he lifts his helmet shade)
Zul, lu busy ke sok? Ada race kat tempat biasa. Amacam kita betting nak?

ZUL
(walks over to fendy )
Tak nak la ni... gila ke.. Esok wa ada hal. Tak boleh wei…

FENDY
(dissapointed with ram)
Banyak hal la lu … Bukan kerja pun esok…

ZUL
(esplaining)
Lagipun gua takde motor bro…

FENDY
(still on his bike... revving)
Itu la lu .. Ada motor lu jual … Nak buat album konon. Pakai motor opis la bro.

ZUL
(esplaining)
Mana boleh!

FENDY
(still on his bike... revving)
Bosan la lu Zul … Takpe, kitaorang gerak dulu … Chow!


Fendy shows snubing face and looks annoyed . revs up his bike and zooms off.... ram walks back to his stall.. Business resumes as usual. A productive evening, ZUL receives a stream of customers – in various colourful characters and personalities – at the stall. In his usual spot, Mat Rahmat sits still observing them


THE GIRL FRIEND

ZUL calls Salwa, who he fondly calls Wawa, on her mobile and home but to no avail. He leaves a message to her housemate to return his call. ZUL returns to the stall.

Minutes later, Wawa arrives at the stall. Accompanying her in the car is a man. She approaches ZUL at the stall.


ZUL
(slightly suprised)
Panjang umur Wawa. Abang baru teringat kan Wawa. Pegi mana abang call handphone, rumah tak dapat. Busy? Abang ada surprise nak bagi tau Wawa.


Wawa and ZUL exchange glances. ZUL looks confused and looks at Wawa

MAN IN CAR
(peering out from the window)
Yang, cepat sikit. Budak budak dah tunggu tu.

WAWA
(looks troubled)
Bang, nak cepat ni. Wawa minta maaf ye. Jaga diri abang baik baik....

ZUL
(lost and abbandoned)
....


Salwa walks off and leaves. ZUL looks at the car as it zooms off into the darkness


RAHMAT
(looks troubled)
Bro.. adik lu ke… Boleh tahan, itu balak dia ke? Ok tu, ada kereta… (he starts whistling)

(peers over)
Burger ayam satu… Abang taruh sayur apa dalam burger?

ZUL
(esplaining)
Biasa la kak.. kobis, bawang, timun … boleh?

MAMEHA
(she frowns at the sound of kobis.... )
Kobis?. ...Tak nak lah, kobis bau kentut…!!!!



BABY
(she walks off in a haste together with Aresha)
Kobis?. ...Tak sesuai tau ...

RAHMAT
(Rahmat Man lets out a hearty laugh. ZUL turns red in embarrassment and looks at the weirdo)
Kentut….!!! Hahahaha…

A young executive approaches the stall. Looking knackered, he politely orders his meal from ZUL


REEZAL
(walk over)
Burger ayam special satu. Hotdog tak nak sayur satu, burfer daging satu ye bang. Terima kasih.

REEZAL
(While waiting for his meal, Reezal’s handphone rings. He answers and starts talking to the person on the other end. The conversation touches on album sales, blah blah )
I understand but album you was just released two days ago, How can you possible expect the record label to lock in the sales today? I’m sorry but I’m afraid I don’t have the figures yet.

Annoyed, Reezal still maintains his calm and composure. He hangs up and smiles at ZUL


ZUL
(while wraping it up)
Problem kerja ke bang? Ni burger abang dah siap …

REEZAL
( he takes out his money and pays ZUL)
Biasa lah … artist baru macam tu lah … album baru keluar dua hari sibuk nau sales. Macam mana tu. Kalau Siti Nurhaliza lain cerita la

ZUL
(ZUL looks concerned)
Susah ke nak jual album sekarang bang?

REEZAL
(while keeping the change into his pocket)
Itu lah saya cakap. Kalau you bukan Siti tak payah lah berangan nak album you terjual laris. Industri muzik kita ni dah makin mengecil bukan berkembang. Kita kat sini bukan macam artistes kat Hollywood dik. Ok, terima kasih ek.

(he passes the burger over to Eric and collects the money and continues wrapping the “ladies of the night” burgers. The girls walk off from the stall)

(cursing in Cantonese to the girls and walks off)

ZUL sighs in relief, collects his guitar and starts playing again. Rahmat Man -- a mysterious man of sorts and a permanent fixture of sorts at his stall – looks at him. He utters no word, turns away and stares into the darkness of the night)

Jehan appears and try to squeeze in between the fat couple and makes and order.. reverse angle.. sees jehan turning around and eddie pak appears.

ZUL
( smiles )

( surprised )
Waa... Banyaknye order... mesti banyak untung si burger boy ni.....

Pirate CD seller take out one from his bang and handed it over to ram and he runs through the stack of CDs and pauses as he spots one which looks familiar to him. He holds it up and asks Tim. His voice shakes in surprise

ZUL takes the CD and stares into it. AH SENG receives a call from his “kaki”
